“We have seen many Martian rocks that show shapes that, from a certain angle, look like a normal shape,” a NASA spokesperson said of the party hat-shaped object.
A cone-shaped object photographed by the Mars rover and questioned by a scientist has been identified by NASA.
The strangely shaped object – captured by NASA’s Curiosity rover in August 2022 in Gale Crater, near the equator of Mars – was first suspected in a Central post from astronomer Avi Loeb on March 8, when the Harvard scientist asked if it was “man-made debris.”
To talk to New York Post, The spokesman for NASA clarified that the object that looked like a metal seemed to be only a rock created by the strong winds of Mars – and the description of its unusual shape of a party hat could be an example of the mental process of pareidolia, when people see recognizable shapes in the clouds, rock formations or other unrelated objects.
“We’ve seen many Martian rocks that show shapes that, at some angle, look like regular shapes,” a NASA spokesperson said. Postnoting that the object measured around 1 cm and was photographed by the rover from 13 feet away.

Winds on Mars are thought to be the main force shaping the atmosphere, despite the planet’s thin atmosphere, according to NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Earth’s winds are thought to have been powerful enough to help move sand and create mountains, as well as other formations – including the oddly placed mountain in the center of the crater.
However, astronomer Loeb pushed back against NASA’s statement about the rock shaped like a party hat, asking the space agency to share a similar example of a cylindrical object that was created by the wind.
“The image clearly shows that there is no rock like this amazing thing in its natural environment,” Loeb said. Post. “If this thing is a rock, we should see more examples of it.”
This is not the first time that objects with unusual shapes have been photographed on Mars.

Last year, NASA scientists wrote about a newly-photographed rock with hundreds of surprising millimeter-sized features, and a few months before that, the Perseverance rover took shots of “popcorn-like images in the sedimentary rocks exposed in the entrance channel of Jezero crater.”

In 2022, the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) photographed a hill on Earth that many believed was shaped like a bear.
“The V-shaped collapse pattern creates a nose, two craters form the eyes, and a circular fracture pattern forms the head. The circular fracture pattern may be the result of processing deposits on a buried crater,” NASA explained at the time.
The following year, Curiosity – which was the largest and most capable rover ever sent to Mars when it launched in 2011 – produced a close-up view of a rock called “Terra Firme,” which is said to look like the open pages of a book.
NASA did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for more information.
